The Sound and Music Computing Group at the Department of Information Engineering - University of Padova (CSC-DEI) holds an important role in the promotion and cultural diffusion of the various disciplines related to the application of new technologies in music and sound.
Research in music technology at CSC-DEI, spans from the analysis and modeling of expressive and emotional content in music performance interaction to sound synthesis by physics-based models, timbre characterization, sound spatialization, auditory display, control models for expressiveness and digital audio post-processing techniques.
Recently the Sound and Music Computing Group at CSC-DEI is particularly concerned with automatic music performance and specific issues of auditory display and, more generally, of multimodality in human-computer interaction. These activities aim at creating a deeper interaction between user (possibly a musician) and machine (possibly an electronic musical instrument). The Sound and Music Computing Group collaborates with various international organizations and artists and has been and is currently involved in the following European Projects and Actions:
- COST G6: Digital Audio Effects DAFx (Digital Audio Effects, COST-G61);
- MEGA (Multisensory Expressive Gesture Applications, IST-1999-204102);
- MOSART (Music Orchestration Systems in Algorithmic Research Technology; EC HPRN-CT- 2000-001153);
- CNR Safeguard of Cultural Heritage Special Project: Electronic storage and preservation of artistic and documentary audio heritage (speech and music) 4;
- Enactive Interfaces (IST-1-002114 ENACTIVE), European Network of Excellence.
- Sound to Sense, Sense to Sound (IST-2004-03773 S2S2), FET-Open Coordination Action.
Research at CSC-DEI, Universita di Padova has also gained the interest and support of the telecommunication, musical instrument and automotive industry.
