The Expertise center for Digital Media (EDM) is a research institute of the Hasselt University (UHasselt). Since 1987 EDM has been carried out scientific research into information and communication technology (ICT) concentrating its research on three leading edge fields:

• Multimedia, communication and Internet Technology;
• Computer graphics, computer animation and virtual environments;
• Human computer interaction.

EDM is active in these three fields at fundamental, basic, applied and contract research levels. The research is carried out with an eye to possible later applications and provides knowledge base for applied research and contract research for commercial firms.

EDM is very active in terms of Flemish and European research projecs. Thus it has carried out more than 25 European projects as part of the European Commision's Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Framework Programmes. In addition, EDM is successful in acquiring projects from the IWT Vlaanderen (Institute for the Promotion of Innovation through Siecnce and Technology in Flandres).research programmes involving both fundamental research and company research projects. EDM also provides sientific services, mainly in the form of contract research and development for big companies (such as Alcatel-Bell, Barco, Belgacom, Concentra Media, Simens, Telnet and VRT), local SMEs and various public bodies.

EDM is one of the research groups initially selected by the Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology (IBBT- www.ibbt.be ), which was set up by Flemsih governament in spring 2004. IBBT is a virtual research institute within which research groups and institutes from from universities and institutions carry out research on blehaf of both the Flemish industry and the Flemmish government. IBBT's research is concentrated on ICT in general and broadband technology in particular.
